Creating a Cozy Outdoor Space

Creating a cozy outdoor space. My design ideas for a boho outdoor space. I'm making a design plan for our new covered deck for the house we're building. Boho deck decor. Cozy design elements for outdoor spaces. I've having fun making design plans for the new house, including this super cozy and unique covered deck!

Our new house is well under way and I’ve been spending some time mentally planning out each room and figuring out where all our stuff is going to go! But one of the spaces that I get to design from scratch is my beautiful covered front deck. I get to dream up everything from furniture to lighting to decor in order to create the perfect cozy outdoor space!

Ok, yes, I don’t have an unlimited budget. If you ask my husband, we actually have no budget for this. But that’s not going to stop me from making a plan! I’m going to design my cozy outdoor space now, and purchase the items as I can afford them. As long as I have a vision for the space, it doesn’t matter if I can’t purchase all the elements right out of the gate.

The only patio furniture we currently own is a 4 place dining table and chairs. And they won’t be going on the front deck. In the future we may create a patio space towards the back of the house, so we’ll save the table and chairs for now.

I can hardly wait for my front deck though. It’s a decent size, and completely covered so I won’t roast in the summer sun.ย  It faces only beautiful trees and I can’t wait to sip my morning tea there!

How to make diy zero waste produce bags! This is a quick DIY for reusable produce bags. A great zero waste project to help you on your eco journey. There's no more need to use those flimsy plastic produce bags that clutter up the landfill anymore! These DIY produce bags are extremely lightweight and slightly transparent making them perfect for transporting your fruits and veggies.

These DIY produce bags worked up a lot faster than I expected! They take about 15 minutes to whip up, so they are a fantastic last minute gift idea!

I’m continuing to make small changes in our lifestyle in order to reduce our waste output. The amount of garbage one little family can make is fairly alarming! So these reusable produce bags are a step in the right direction. The zero waste movement tugs on my heart strings and I’m always looking for ways to improve. And if I can turn those improvements into a DIY project, so much the better!

I found the cute bee printed ribbon at my local sewing store, it was a great find! I thought it was really appropriate too, you know ‘save the bees, don’t fill their wildflower fields with plastic’. That’s how the saying goes, right?! Haha

I found this ribbon on Amazon, it’s similar to my bees. But you’ll likely find an appropriate ribbon at your local craft store.

Here’s what you need for this project:

Bee Ribbon, Cotton, 3/4 yard per produce bag, at least 3/4″ wide
Satin Ribbon, 1 yard per bag, 1/4″-3/8″ wide
White Cotton Voile Fabric, 1 yard will make 4 bags

use white cotton voile to make diy zero waste produce bags

I found some cotton voile at my local fabric store, it was about $12/meter, which is pretty inexpensive for 4 produce bags!

I used voile because it is super lightweight and you can mostly see through it. So it won’t add much weight to your produce and the cashier will still be able to read the stickers through the bag. ๐Ÿ™‚

Building a Dream Home

We want to move up the property ladder, and our budget is saying no. This is our sorta crazy plan to make our dreams a reality!

Do you ever get the feeling that the perfect house for your family just doesn’t exist? Like thereโ€™s nothing on the market that can meet all your needs let alone your wants? That’s the dilemma we are currently facing. We’ve been growing increasingly unsatisfied with our current home, but there doesn’t seem to be any other existing houses in our budget that will suit our needs. Unfortunately the next rung in the property ladder is well beyond a reasonable budget. So we’re getting creative instead!

My big dream is to live in a cottage by the sea. I want the space and the air and the freedom feelings of country living. My husband would like to live downtown in a big city. Our dreams don’t quite line up. lol. So we need compromise!

Our limitations include maintaining a reasonable commute for my husband (under 30 mins) and staying within our current school district. We love our boys’ school and I don’t think my oldest could handle the disruption of switching schools.ย

Those limitations really narrow down the available areas we could possibly move to.ย

When we search for listings, we have been nothing but disappointed. The only homes available are either major fixer-uppers (which we’ve done before and no thanks) or are these horrible ugly McMansions that we wouldn’t want even if we could afford them!

Mini Master Makeover – DIY Bedroom Update On A Budget

DIY Bedroom Update on a Budget! My master bedroom was in desperate need of a re-fresh. But I'm a girl on a budget with a heart for DIY! So I came up with economical ways to spruce things up and create a super cozy refuge.

It was time. Long overdue actually. Our master bedroom was in desperate need of a refresh. Our comforter had gotten pretty ratty, our sheets were thread-bare and the headboard was feeling too busy. I’m a big believer in colour, I know it’s not for everyone, but I actually loved all the patterns I had going on in the old bedroom. But. My health has been struggling lately and I need to do everything in my power to encourage quality sleep. Including making my bedroom as comfy cozy as possible. So for my DIY bedroom update, I opted to stick with greys and pinks and keep things as soft and un-busy as possible. Here’s what I came up with! All on a budget of course. ๐Ÿ™‚

I’ve been planning this master bedroom update for a while now. The flip side of not having a lot of money to accomplish projects is that you usually have to do a LOT of advanced planning and waiting. ๐Ÿ™‚

Maybe some day I’ll be able to just walk into IKEA and buy an entire bedroom, furniture, decor and the works as is. But today is not that day. So that means being a little creative instead.

All in all, I spent about $85 (cad) of my own cash on this master mini-makover. But in the interest of full disclosure, if I had paid for everything outright it would have cost about $300. Which is still not a bad price for such a cozy bedroom!

Cool Kitchen Gadgets

There seems to be a cutesy gadget for just about any kitchen task you can think of! I’ve been bookmarking them for months every time I spot one while shopping. My husband says my bookmarks are getting out of hand! Haha! Considering I have about 30 tabs open right now, it’s not surprising I also have a kajillion bookmarks.

I wanted to share this kitsch-y list so you can also shop for items you really don’t need. I don’t want to be all alone in this!

There’s likely to be more lists in the future….I have a lot of bookmarks to get through….
