Have A Plan

First and foremost you should make sure you have a thorough plan well in advance of starting your moving preparations. It might seem like a cliche these days but the saying ‘failure to prepare is preparing to fail’ might never ring truer than when you are moving home. Some things that you might want to consider when it comes to making a plan is starting a spreadsheet or document which details where you are putting your belongings and what labels to create.

Regardless of if your new home is bigger, smaller or a similar size, you should not take everything with you. Over the time you have lived at your current property there is a good chance that you have collected a lot of things that you don’t actually want or need.

One of the ways I declutter is to look at an item and think “do I love this thing enough to bother packing it up and moving it to a new house?”. The other way is to binge watch Marie Kondo’s Netflix show and throw everything away. 😛

You might also want to consider renting a self-storage unit so that you don’t have to move everything into your new home all at once. Remember, when you arrive at the new house you are going to have plenty to do, like reno projects, so some of the finer decorating details can wait. That means instead of having boxes full of items cluttering up your new home, leave them in storage until you’re ready for them. You may even find that you don’t need those items in your life at all. Yay for more decluttering!

Starting To Pack

Packing early is vital to ensuring your move goes smoothly. But you shouldn’t be packing for the sake of it, instead you should pay attention to the plan you have prepared. Consider clearing one room or category at a time so that you can name the boxes and list them on your spreadsheet. That means when you arrive at your new property you can place each series of boxes into their respective rooms thanks to a careful organization process.

Some of the items you can start boxing up early might be books, seasonal items, decor pieces etc.

Enlist Help

Finally, GET HELP! You must make sure you get help where you can. The best thing to do is to hire moving professionals to get you from a to b. Remember that these people spend their days moving families between properties so they will have experience and knowledge that you just can’t have. Instead of piling stress on yourself, if you have at your disposal moving experts you will be able to delegate some of the harder tasks of moving to the professionals.

I think moving house is one life’s tasks that impossible to do without help. If you can’t get professionals, rally up some family and friends with the promise that you’ll help them out when they plan to move.
