Ok, I’m a little bit obsessed with these carrots. They were the rare exception to the crafting rule because I totally winged it while making them and they turned out great on the first attempt! To my utter shock and delight because that never happens. I had exactly 3 hours to design, sew and photograph them and by golly I did it!
(The downside to working for myself, and all by myself is that there’s no one else around to congratulate me on a job well done. lol. Send some virtual applause please?)
These felt carrots are sweet and charming for Easter decorating. You could put one on everyone’s plate for dinner time. Or string them together into a garland. Or somehow fill a vase with them? I’m sure Pinterest can show you how.
I’m just pleased I had the presence of mind to remember the adorable bunny plates I found on clearance at Walmart last year! How sweet are they with felt carrots on them?!
But these carrots are also perfect for a little one’s play kitchen. Like to fill up a veggie basket or something? So cute! They’re multi-functional carrots!
(disclaimer: only give these to children if they are old enough not to chew or choke on them. Please use your best judgement, these carrots may not be suitable toys for all children.)

DIY Felt Carrot
Ok, let’s get into it.
Here’s what you’ll need to make one felt carrot:
Printed Pattern: Find the download link at the bottom of the post. No sign-up required for now!
Orange Felt – 6″ x 6″
Green Felt – 4″ x 6″
22 Gauge Floral Wire – 10.5″
Stuffing – Poly or wool roving
Hot Glue Gun
Orange & Cream Thread
Sewing Machine
Scissors
This is my favourite shop for purchasing the best quality wool and wool-blend felt!
(Ignore the little piece of white thread in the pic below, I tried to give the carrots some little stringy roots and it didn’t work. haha)
Step 1: Cut out one wedge for the carrot, one single leaf and one double leaf.

Step 2: Thread your sewing machine with cream coloured thread and stitch some random straight lines all over the wedge.
I went forwards, back and forwards again to lock in the stitches on each line. For a few of the lines add a shorter line either right above or below it.

Step 3: Fold the wedge over and sew a seam, right sides together about 1/8th of an inch.
(again, ignore the white string in the pic below.)

Step 4: Flip the carrot right way out. You can do this partway just with your hands, but then you will need a tool like a slim dowel or even a mechanical pencil or end of a paintbrush to push the point of the carrot out as much as it will go without completely popping open.

Step 5: Cut the floral wire into 3, 3.5″ lengths.
Run a thin line of hot glue down the center of a leaf, starting about 1/2″ from the top point.
Place a wire in the glue and immediately pinch the leaf closed, around the wire. Hold the leaf closed until the glue sets.
Repeat with the remaining 2 leaves. I admit it is a little awkward because the leaves are curved. You might find it easier if you put a slight bend in the wires too.

Step 6: Trim the wire ends to be flush with the bottom of the leaves.
Glue the single leaf in between the double leaves. Add a little extra glue to the bottom of the bunch of 3 leaves and pinch it all closed so the leaves form a cluster.

Step 7: Add some stuffing to the carrot. I like to add some shredded felt scraps into my stuffing. It’s a good way to use them up.
Stuff the carrot as firmly as you’d like, stopping at about 1/2″ from the top. I opted for a less firm look.

Step 8: Use 2 strands of orange thread and create a running stitch along the top edge of the carrot.

Step 9: Gently pull the thread to gather up the top of the carrot. Stop pulling when you still have a 1/2″ opening.

Step 10: Plop a generous dollop of glue down into the hole on top of the stuffing. Stick the green leaf topper down into the glue and hold it there until the glue sets.
Continue pulling the thread until the top of the carrot is snugly gathered around the leaf cluster. Secure it in place with several small stitches.

Lastly, impress everyone with your adorable veggie creations!
