So I had so much fun making these carrots for Easter that I wanted to write up a whole round-up post of free felt vegetable DIYs. But in my research process for that post, I did not find a satisfactory felt pea pod pattern to include. So I decided to design it myself! And I couldn’t be more pleased with the results!
Some of my favourite projects have been the ones I wasn’t planning or expecting to make but were born out of necessity, or were a custom request, or were whipped up at the last minute. It’s funny how that works. Other projects I agonize over and carefully plan & execute only for them to fall flat when presented to my audience. Crafting is so unpredictable!
This felt pea pod DIY is a very quick and easy sewing tutorial. It probably took me about 1.5-2 hours to make all five of these pods, including cutting them out! You could whip up a basketful in an afternoon.
These peas are mostly designed to be play food, but if you’re an adventurous decorator, you could string them together into a garland or add strings to turn them into ornaments! You could even use them as a brooch or a whimsical hair clip.
Ohhh, you could add them to a tablescape or cornucopia for Thanksgiving!
Disclaimer: The felt balls should be well secured with glue inside the pods. However, should they become dislodged, they could present a choking hazard. You know your child best. If they are likely to put these pea pods in their mouths, the pods might not be a suitable toy for them. The Yellow Birdhouse is not responsible for harm sustained while playing with felt food made from our patterns.
Ok, enough with the heavy, let’s get crafting!
Materials to Make One DIY Felt Pea Pod
Here’s what you’ll need to make one adorable felt pea pod DIY:
Printed Pattern – Find it at the bottom of the post, no sign-up required.
Darker Green Felt – 2″ x 4″
Lighter Green Felt – 1 1/2″ x 2 3/4″
1cm Felt Balls x5
Embroidery thread to match the darker green
Hot Glue Gun
Sewing Needle and Straight Pin
Embroidery Scissors
Finished pea pod measures approximately 3/4″ x 3 3/4″
I used a darker Moss green felt, and lighter Fern green felt from this listing and these Fern felt balls.
Per pea pod, cut out one darker green outer layer and one lighter green inner layer.

How to Sew a Felt Pea Pod
Step 1: Layer the lighter green piece on top of the darker green, centering it width-wise. Line up the top edges. Use two strands of matching darker thread to join the two layers with a blanket stitch along the width of the lighter piece. Stop stitching when you reach the end of the lighter green piece but don’t tie off the thread. Remove the needle and leave the thread tail hanging on for later.

Step 2: Gently pull the other edge of the lighter green piece across to line up with the edge of the darker green on the opposite side. Pin them together. There will be a gap between the layers, they do not lie flat at this point.

Step 3: Use two new strands of thread to join the layers of felt together with a blanket stitch along the edge. This time don’t remove the needle.

Step 4: Now fold the pea pod in half and continue blanket stitching around the first point, joining the two sides together to begin forming the ‘boat’ shape of the pod.
Next, re-thread the needle on the opposite side and stitch around the second point from where you left off.

Step 5: Place 5 felt balls into the pea pod and arrange them symmetrically. One by one, use dots of hot glue to secure them to the inside of the pod.

Step 6: Once the peas are secured, you can add a line of glue to the inside walls of the pod to adhere them to the peas, which gives the pod a more closed appearance. If you’re happy for the pod to look more opened up, skip this step.

And now look how stupid cute these are?!!!
