I’m not sure if this design is more lamb than sheep, I’m not well versed in farm culture. But either way, I think he’s adorable!
Typically my designs are 3D, so doing a flat design opened up different detailing and layering possibilities, which was fun to explore. Especially since a sheep is mostly white, it was a puzzle to figure out how to distinguish it’s different elements without the sheep just looking like a white blob!
What to do With a DIY Felt Sheep Decoration?
While I’ve designed this little lamb face as an ornament, here are a few other ways you can use it:
- In a garland, either with multiple sheep or with felt balls
- As a bookmark, by adding an elastic loop as if making a headband
- As a decorative coaster
- As a patch on a backpack
- To decorate an Easter basket
- For puppetry, by adding a wooden dowel and letting little imaginations take over
- Make the sheep in black and gift it as a joke to a family member!
One design can be surprisingly versatile and does not need to be used for the single purpose pictured!
There’s also a fair amount of blank space both around the sheep and the backside of the ornament. You could easily add some personalization with an embroidered name, date, or phrase.
The pattern download is available in both PDF and SVG file formats.

Note: I used this beautiful blue daisy dots printed felt for one of the ornament backings. I love it so much! I also recently used printed felt to make rain boots for this adorable Silly Goose pattern. Printed felt is opening up a world of possibilities that I’m so excited to explore!
On the green ornament, I used a fun variegated embroidery thread to do the blanket stitching all around. I think it added a subtle pop of colour to the otherwise fairly simple design. The thread colour transitions from green to pink. I purchased it at my local craft store.
How to Make a Felt Sheep Ornament
Cut everything out according to the instructions on the PDF pattern page. The SVG files have no text, so please refer to the PDF if you need directions.
Start by arranging and centering all the elements onto one of the circle backings to confirm the position and placement of everything.

Step 1: Remove the face, ears, and hair without shifting the placement of the neck fluff. Stitch the neck fluff layer in place with a single strand of matching thread and a backstitch.

Step 2: Double check the placement for the face and ears. Pin the ears in place and stitch them down with a single strand of matching thread and a backstitch.

Step 3: Pin the face in place and stitch it down with a single strand of matching thread and a backstitch. Make sure the pink ears sit properly inside the white ears.

Step 4: Now sew the hair piece in place so that it partially disguises where the ears connect to the face. Use a single strand of matching thread and a backstitch.

Step 5: Use a heat erasable pen to draw the eyes, nose, and mouth on the face. Or you can freehand the embroidery if you’re feeling confident!

Step 6: Embroider the face details with 2 strands of dark grey thread and a tiny split stitch. (The free download will include a pdf stitch guide!)
Remove the markings with a heat source like an iron or mini hair straightener.
Note: At this point, you could add a name or a date or other embroidery either to the front or back of the ornament to personalize it further!

Step 7: Layer the front circle on top of the backing circle and pin them together. Tuck the ends of a ribbon loop between the layers at the top. Use 2 strands of thread to sew the circles together with a blanket stitch, making sure to lock the ribbon in place with the stitching as you work around.

Now then, how adorable is the finished ornament?! Is the printed felt not absolutely darling?!
Easy DIY Felt Easter Decor
I paired up the sheep with a little chickie friend from another freebie diy post. They are so sweet together, they’d be perfect to hang on an Easter tree. That’s a thing, right? Budding branches in a vase with Spring or Easter themed decorations on it? I should give it a try this year…

I love how these sheep ornaments turned out. Let me know how you intend to use them!
