If your kids are looking for something extra special this year, look no further. This list of 32 creative Halloween costumes for families will show that you don’t have to break the bank to get a one-of-a-kind look that will make your family stand out.
My family might pair up with another family to do a BIG group costume this year! We’re leaning towards Harry Potter, and I’ve been told I’d be a great Professor McGonagall. I’m not convinced it’s a compliment but I choose to see it that way! lol
Halloween Costumes for Families
I think I’ve rounded up some fantastic ideas of super fun Halloween costumes for families in this post. Whether you’re a group of 3 or 33, there’s something here that sure to suit your needs! Almost all of these ideas can be either expanded or reduced to meet the number of people you’re trying to costume.
Some of the photos below show only children in these family costumes, but the ideas can be adapted to include adults too. I mostly wanted a list of ideas as inspiration rather than ones that should be exactly copied.
For the most part, these ideas all have some instructions on how to assemble the costume. A few of them are just inspiration photos though.
These Halloween costumes for families are generally a combination of store bought items and DIY’d elements. No one likes to spend a lot of money on an outfit that will literally only be worn for one night, so DIY is the way to go to save a few bucks.
Most of the photos are followed by some amazon links in case you need some items to help get you started in the costume build or if you’re not the DIY type, OR if you’re in a hurry and need that 2 day shipping!
Family Costumes for 3
1. Monsters Inc
Boo, Sully and Mike. How adorable is this? I’ve seen lots of simple variations of this Monsters Inc themed costume, it’s an easy one to DIY. All you really need is a bright green top, a bright blue top and a purple top. The details you can add yourself!
If you’re feeling hesitant to DIY or in a rush, here’s a link to a toddler sized Boo costume.
2. Harry Potter
Harry, Ron and Hermione. The classic three. If you have a bigger group, this option is easily expanded with Dumbledore, Snape, You Know Who and many others!
If you need some orange for Ron’s hair or black for Harry’s, I’ve used this L’oreal Colorista temporary spray on my kids and it works great!
Wands are easy to DIY using chopsticks, hot glue and some paint. Or, in a pinch, collect some sticks from outside!
Ties can be made with felt and here’s a link to some Hogwart’s robes.
3. Super Mario
Mario, Princess Peach and Luigi (not pictured.) Again, other characters can easily be added for a bigger group. Toad, Yoshi, and Bowser would be most welcome!
You can probably track down what you need at your local thrift store, some overalls, green and red shirts and caps and a pretty pink dress. (Which you can embellish with adhesive gems if you so choose.) Black moustaches can be drawn on with eyeliner and a gold princess crown can be made out of felt!
4. Alvin and the Chipmunks
Alvin, Simon and Theodore. What an adorable trio! This costume looks very simple, all you need is to track down the correct colour shirts and glue a big felt A to the red one! Start at your local thrift store for this one!

5. Jurassic Park
Alan, Ellie and a little Dino. I love it! You could also add Ian Malcom if you have a fourth person, or just add more dinosaurs!
Again, you can start at your local thrift store to assemble this costume. You can likely find clothes that are a close enough match.
Here are some park lanyards to add a little authenticity. Here’s a link to a red kerchief and here’s an adorable toddler dino outfit!
6. Cat in the Hat, Things 1 and 2
I’m not sure who the second cat is supposed to be, lol. We stopped reading Dr. Seuss a couple years ago. (Only because my kids grew out it, not because it isn’t great!)
Things 1 & 2 just need thrifted bright red outfits, Cat needs a black onesie and striped hat. You could use the same spray hair dye I mentioned above to create the blue hair. White and red felt could be used for the fur patch and bow tie.
7. Shark Attack
Lifeguard, adorable baby shark and swimming victim!
You just need a lifeguard sweatshirt and maybe a whistle, some swim shorts, bloodied t-shirt and of course a tiny shark outfit!
8. Back to the Future
Marty, Doc and Jennifer. You can always add Biff or Lorraine if you have more people!
You’ll need the classic red vest of course, some blue jeans and a skateboard for Marty. Jennifer needs some classic 80s attire, funky leggings and lots of hairspray! Doc needs a white jumpsuit and some wild white hair.
Family Halloween Costumes for 4 People
9. Wizard of Oz
I would probably opt for the classic group of Dorothy, Tin Man, Lion and Scarecrow. But the good witch is very beautiful too!
This option does require some very specific costume pieces that may be difficult to thrift. There’s lots of options on Amazon for the different characters.
10. Addams Family
For 4 people, stick with Morticia, Wednesday, Pugsley and Gomez. You can always add Cousin Itt, Lurch and Uncle Fester for a larger group.
I think you can thrift a lot of these pieces, or assemble all your black and white clothing to see what you can do with it. But there’s always Amazon! The new Wednesday look with the frilly black dance dress is pretty great too!
11. Goldilocks
Oh how sweet is this?! Goldilocks and her 3 bears!
A sunny yellow dress with a little apron can probably be thrifted and their are some cute brown bear onesies for both adults and children on Amazon!
12. Ninja Turtles
Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo and Raphael! If you have more people, you can always add Splinter, April and Shredder.
With a base of green unitards, you can DIY the rest of the turtle-y and ninja-y elements with cardboard and bits of fabric.
13. Wolf & 3 Little Pigs
This would be so cute for a dad to dress up as the big bad wolf and have the kiddos be the piggies! I love how simple the costumes pictured below are. Less fuss is always a good idea!
A collection of pig pink clothes plus some piggie noses and ears is all you need for the pigs. These furry ears would be great for the wolf.
Halloween Costumes for Family of 5
14. Peter Pan
Pan, Croc, Hook, Tink and a Lost Boy. I’d add Wendy or Smee for a larger group, and even more lost boys for a big big group!
Peter Pan himself can be made with green leggings and a darker green t-shirt that you cut a zig zag hem out of. The hat can be made out of felt.
There are some great felt crocodile masks on Etsy as well as patterns to make your own. You can DIY a cardboard clock.
There are some great Tinkerbell costume options on Amazon, for all sizes, same as Captain Hook.
15. Power Rangers
Go, go Power Rangers! Oh this takes me back to my 90s childhood! The post contains a good tutorial for how to assemble the costumes.
16. Scooby Doo
Velma, Daphne, Fred, Scooby and I’d add Shaggy too.
I think you could probably thrift most of the clothing pieces for the human characters. Here’s a Scooby tee shirt, and here’s a Mystery Machine van pet suit for the family pooch! 😀
Scalable Depending on Family Size
This next batch of ideas are for costumes that can easily be adjusted for the number of people in your family or group.
17. Beekeeper & Bees
For more people, just keep adding bees!
You can get bee keeper costumes, or you can get a real bee keeper hat and veil for a similar price point. You never know when you might need one in real life! There are lots of little bee costume options available here.
18. Star Wars
I think there’s lots of variations you can do with a Star Wars theme. There are so many characters to work with. And when in doubt, just keep adding more stormtroopers, right?!
There’s lots of Jedi robes and Stormtrooper outfits available on Amazon, for the more niche characters you’ll have to do some DIY though.
19. Pokémon
Gotta catch ’em all! Mom and dad are the trainers and the kiddos are different Pokémons. So cute!
The trainer outfits look easy enough to assemble or thrift. There are quite a few different Pokémon costumes available on Amazon, and this fun pokéball treat pail too!
20. Bank Robbers
This would be a great last minute group costume!
You can probably thrift the black beanies and pants. DIY the masks with a bit of black felt or fabric and use canvas totes and a sharpie for the cash bags. The shirts you might find locally at an Old Navy or Walmart, or there are some here on Amazon.
21. Robots
These robot costumes are great! All you need is a lot of cardboard and bright paint colours!
If you’re into cardboard crafting, check out this post of 30 Cardboard Box Costume Ideas.
22. Queen of Hearts
This Queen of Hearts is so fun! I’d love to convince my family to do this group costume this year!
I would start with thrifting as much as possible to assemble these costumes. I think the Knights’ armour could be made with cardboard and a lot of the embellishments can be DIY’d like the staff and the medals. There are a lot of really great costume options for the queen here.
23. Where’s Waldo
A whole family of Waldos! You can probably find everything you need for this costume set at thrift stores or digging through your closet! A white baby onesie and some red sharpie would work just fine for the littlest Waldo.
24. Emojis
There’s a whole world of emojis to choose from! You can be anything! All you need is a few big pieces of cardboard and some yellow paint to pull this off.
25. Crayons
A rainbow of crayons!
You just need some monochromatic pyjama sets for the kiddos, like these ones or these other ones. Some black felt will do the trick for the ankle details and construction paper for the hats.
26. Price is Right
Who doesn’t love the Price is Right?! Just don’t be like Alyssa, lol. This is an easy DIY costume with some solid coloured tee shirts, cardboard and masking tape numbers.
27. Star Trek
Ok, but how is the little guy on the left such an exact Captain Kirk miniature?!
You can DIY these Star Trek costumes with black undershirts, coloured v-necks on top and some rick rack details around the cuffs. Make some communicator badges out of felt and get Spock a pair of pointy ears! Or find full costumes for both kids and adults here.

28. Planets
It’s up to you if Pluto gets included or not!
29. Farmers & Produce
The kiddos can be fruits or veggies!
30. Tiger King
Carole, Joe Exotic and a tiger or two!
Carole’s costume can be thrifted, Joe Exotic too or grab this version instead. And here are a few tiger options.
31. Peanuts Gang
Snoopy, Charlie Brown, Linus, Lucy, Sally, Woodstock. There’s a lot of them! You can probably thrift a lot of the clothing pieces.

Mom and dad can be zookeepers with a variety of kiddo animals!
Ok that’s all the ideas I’ve got for now, I had to draw the line at 32! Do you have something you’d add to this list of delightful Halloween costume ideas for families?
