Who doesn’t love a Christmas village decorating a snowy mantel!? Add in a couple bottle brush trees and I’m obsessed.
I had big plans to create a Christmas house out of felt this year, but I got swamped making ornaments for my shop and holiday markets, so I ran out of time. There’s alway next year, right? I’m thinking it’ll be a cute little A-frame style house!
With only 10 days til Christmas, I’m cutting it close with this round-up. But I figure I can’t be the only one who might use the post-Christmas days of food induced semi-consciousness to craft up some decor. 😛 (Plus all the Christmas craft supplies might be on sale by then!)
All these ideas are free, like the cut files or pdfs for the paper houses and stencils for the other styles.
DIY Christmas Village Ideas
I tried to find a variety of ideas for this round-up, to incorporate different craft mediums and skill level. Hopefully you find something in this list that meets your needs!
I had no luck finding any fabric or sewn houses though. If you have other tutorials I can add to this post, tell me in the comments!
Paper Houses
Many of these require a Cricut or Silhouette cutting machine, but several of them are also available as printable pdf’s, so you can hand-cut the paper if you prefer.
1. Mini House Luminaries

2. Gold Foil Village
This one requires a specialized attachment for the cutting machine in order to create the gold foil effect. But this house was just too beautiful to be left off this list!

3. Simple Winter Village
It’s the beautiful ‘stained glass’ in the church windows for me!

4. Tiny Houses Wreath
These houses are teensy and adorable! They’re great to make a wreath as shown, but also perfect for decorating smaller spaces that can’t accommodate large sized villages.

5. Colourful Luminaries
I love a non-traditional colour scheme for Christmas!

6. Holiday Houses
These DIY Christmas village houses are a bigger size, they’d be fun to make with the kiddos!

Wood Houses
There are a variety of tools and skill levels required for the following DIY Christmas villages, I tried to find something for everyone!
7. Simple Village with Stencils
These are simple wooden blocks and included is a free stencil to create the windows and doors.

8. Wooden Gingerbread
This is another fairly simple design. I wonder, if you’re not comfortable using cutting tools, if a couple wooden siding shingles would work for the roof? Just a thought

9. Houses on the Mantel
The window frames are designed for dollhouses I believe. If you didn’t want to cut out the holes for the windows, you could glue on a winter scene pulled from a magazine instead?

10. Simple Wooden Village
These are pre-purchased houses, stained and painted.

11. Reversible Gingerbread Haunted House
I love a multi-purpose decor piece!

12. Colourful Painted (bird) Houses
These are birdhouses from the craft store!

Ceramic Houses
Clay and dough DIY Christmas village ideas.
13. Tiny Clay Village
These would be cute to tuck into a potted plant and make it look like a fairy holiday village.

14. Upcycled Houses
These are dollar store ceramic houses (which you can often find even cheaper at the thrift store) but they look so classy painted in this style!

15. Salt Dough Gingerbread
I like the effect of the snowy roofs. I think I’d go for an icy blue and seafoam green colour scheme though.

16. Clay Holiday Houses
These are an air dry clay. Again, another fun DIY to do with kiddos.

That’s it! Which of these DIY Christmas village ideas do you think you’ll try?
Happy Holiday Crafting!
